The history of beer goes back a long time. In fact it is one of the oldest fermented beverages and there is evidence of beer production dating back to at least 3500 BC. In Iceland however the history of beer is considerably shorter.
The first microbrewery to open in Iceland was Kaldi brewery, in the tiny village Árskógarströnd, in 2006. By this time, microbreweries and craft breweries were already a hopping scene in other countries, especial- ly in the US where many would argue the modern craft beer revolution began. Small breweries had of course been around for centuries, especially in Eu- rope, but in the late 20th century a new generation of small craft breweries started to appear.
